The Carey turtles back to Punta Cana

The Carey turtles back to Punta CanaAfter 10 years of absence

The Carey turtle is giving birth again in the zone of Punta Cana, in the Eastern zone of Dominican Republic, thanks to ecological programs of protection developed by the tourist complex Punta Cana Resort and Club, informed sources of this company.

150 Carey turtles, an animal in danger of extinction, reproduced again on the beach of the Tortuga Bay Hotel and on that of the Punta Cana Hotel.

The environmental director of the Punta Cana Group, Jake Kheel, considered that the return of the turtles is certainly the result of reconditioning work of the beach and of the improvements on the water quality level carried out in the zone.

He ensured that the Punta Cana Ecological Foundation has a solid commitment with the sea life, this is why it has implemented for three years the « Sustainable Ecological Coastal Areas » project.

For our destination, the come back of the turtles constitutes a great event and it shows us the results we reach with the environmental programs that we develop. We are very happy of their return, moreover, our hotel shop is called Tortuga Bay in honor of the Carey turtles, expressed Kheel.

With this program, the Foundation is doing researches and identifies the principal problems of the coastal area, proposes scientifically viable solutions and sets up plans of management aiming at decreasing the negative impacts.

The Carey turtle is regarded as severely threatened and is on the red list of International Union for the Nature Conservation (IUNC) because of hunting.

Its carapace is used to work out various objects, which caused an international traffic of hundreds of thousands of carcasses during the years when its hunting was legal.
